Campo Vacino a Rome. - The glass has been replaced but the inscribed mount and backing with its importer's/retailer's labels are original. / Donated to RPS collection by Miss Talbot of Lacock Abbey and so can reasonably be presumed to have belonged to William Henry Fox Talbot.  The plate will have been imported to the UK by Claudet and Houghton from Lerebours in Paris.  The low number on the label may indicate an early date.  It is also likely that Talbot would have been an early purchaser of an example of a daguerreotype.  This plate may be one of the group of views of European cities sent to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in April 1840.  According to the Encyclopaedia of 19th Century Photography'  they bought the best and the remainder were exhibited at the Royal Society.  W.H.F.
